Girlzone
For lesbians, gay women, bisexual women & T women
in the Scottish Highlands
Based in Inverness
Originally formed back in 2002, Girls @ The Gate lost our venue in Inverness when The Gate cafe-bar changed hands in August 2003 and stopped being gay-friendly. We re-named ourselves GirlZone and now meet for lunch in Inverness city centre twice a month (on the first Saturday and third Friday).
The next GirlZone dates are:
- Saturday 4 February: GirlZone Lunch from 1pm in Wetherspoons, Church Street.
- Friday 17 February: GirlZone lunch from 12.30pm - 2pm in the restaurant upstairs in Debenhams (take the lift to the very top floor in the Eastgate shopping centre, don't go to the cafe on the ground floor!)
- Saturday 3 March: GirlZone Lunch from 1pm in Wetherspoons, Church Street.
- Friday 16 March: GirlZone lunch from 12.30pm - 2pm in the restaurant upstairs in Debenhams (take the lift to the very top floor in the Eastgate shopping centre, don't go to the cafe on the ground floor!)
GirlZone is a friendly, informal social group for all ages over 16. If you identify as a gay woman, lesbian, bisexual woman or trans woman (or if you are unsure or questioning your sexual orientation), then feel free to get in touch. All welcome whether married, separated, divorced, single or living with a partner (male or female), with or without kids!
If you're nervous about coming along, a couple of us can meet you in advance and show you we don't bite! Feel free to bring along a straight friend for support if you wish.
Look for the blue box! We have a small cardboard blue cube (actually it's a shiny little gift box!) on the table to identify us for the benefit of any newcomers who just want to drop by. Find the blue box and you'll know you've got the right table!
We have women who come along from places throughout the Highlands & Moray including Nairn, Elgin, Tain and sometimes as far afield as Caithness.
For more details, contact Joanne on 0779 222 3687 or email her at girlzone@gay-ness.org.uk
We now have a Girlzone Inverness page on Facebook (please press the Like button!)
All women are welcome at GirlZone!
COMING OUT
If you are just coming out as a lesbian or bi, check out the
LGBT Youth Scotland web site which has lots of great info and advice. They operate a national text message support service which you can contact by texting "info" to 07786 202370 and a trained youth worker will text you back. Available for under 25s.
HELPLINE
The
LGBT Centre for Health and Wellbeing has launched the Lothian LGBT Helpline on 0131 556 4049 and this is available every Wednesday, 12.30-7pm. The helpline offers support and information on a range of issues including sexuality, relationships and coming out. The service is available to anyone who is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender and those questioning their sexuality or gender identity. It is also there to help families, friends, supporters and any other agencies acting on behalf of an LGBT person.
Alternatively, you can call the
Strathclyde Gay & Lesbian Switchboard 7-10pm every night on 0141 847 0447. They also operate the Lesbian Line on 0141 847 0547 on Wednesdays from 7.30pm to 10pm - this is a female-only confidential telephone support service. The volunteers are all women, and they will only take phone calls from women.
Older Lesbians
A research project about older lesbians, 'The Lives of British Lesbians Over Sixty,' based at the University of Sussex, will build the first-ever comprehensive picture of older lesbian life in the UK. For more info, visit:
