6 July 2012
We are sad to say that our dear friend Val Jackson passed away on 4th July 2012. Val was a stalwart member of Girlzone, LGBT Moray and the Highland Rainbow Folk. After being discharged from the RAF because of her sexual orientation, she had two sucessful careers in both nursing and criminal justice. An avid reader and birdwatcher, she also loved meeting people. She was never short of anecdotes to entertain us and had a brilliant sense of humour and timing. As well as being a celebrant with the Humanist Society Scotland, she also volunteered her time at the Burghead Visitor Centre. Val was a pleasure to be with and always ready to volunteer for anything she could do to help. She will be sadly missed by the LGBT community in Highland and Moray. Our thoughts are with her partner, daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren.
In Val's memory, the Highland LGBT Forum launched the 'Val Jackson BIG Heart Fund' to ensure that LGBT folk across the Highlands and Islands are not isolated due to financial hardship.
She will always live on in a part of all those privileged to know her and we are proud that through this fund she will continue to support LGBT people as she did in life with her big heart. THANK YOU VAL.
As of February 2013, the fund stands at over £900 including a very generous donation from the Humanist Society Scotland.
Donations to the fund are very welcome
